How Can You Protect Yourself From CO Poisoning?
The best way to protect yourself and your loved ones from carbon monoxide poisoning is prevention. And prevention is synonymous with engine maintenance.
Regular checks — especially the exhaust pipe nipple, exhaust manifold, and hoses — and regular, professional maintenance will help provide an important defense against carbon monoxide. Your engine should be checked every time you start it or every eight hours, whichever comes sooner.
Carbon monoxide detectors are a relatively reliable of defense against carbon monoxide. It is a good idea to install a carbon monoxide detector in the living quarters or enclosed bridge area of your boat. And, be sure engine room bulkheads are sealed against leaks into accommodation areas.
Also, bilge blowers, which are intended to vent explosive and flammable gases, can minimize the chances of exposure to carbon monoxide.
Relying on these devices alone, though, is unwise. Prevention through inspection and maintenance is the most sure way to avoid CO poisoning.
